Program Overview

The MDes (Communication Design) is a 2 year post-graduate degree program (4 semesters) that offers specializations in Visual Communication Design and Interaction Design.

This distinctive interdisciplinary program  prepares  students to pursue careers in  the fields of Graphic Design, User Experience / Interface Design, Film-making, Animation, Photography, Design research and teaching.

Program Structure

MDes(CD) is a full time two-year program, which is divided into four semesters. The program blends Design concepts, skills and practices with inputs from the disciplines of  Sociology, Anthropology and Cultural studies. Students are encouraged to understand and engage with real life contexts and evolve habits of critical thinking for effective problem solving. At the end of the 2 year program students are expected to understand Design processes and methods and be able to conceptualize and prototype solutions to communication problems in various social and cultural contexts.

The detailed  course structure consisting of both core courses and elective courses can be found on Institute website at http://mdes.daiict.ac.in/

Eligibility Criteria

A Bachelors Degree or equivalent from a statutory university in the fields of Design, Science, Engineering, Technology, Humanities, Social Sciences, Fine Arts, Applied Arts and Performing Arts. Professional Diplomas from nationally recognized institutions such as NID, NIFT, CEPT and Srishti School of Art and Design will also be considered for eligibility. Candidates with more than year’s work experience apart from their qualifying degree are also encouraged to apply. Candidates must have 55% marks or equivalent in the last qualifying degree/examination and are required to submit the provisional Degree certificate or proof of completion of Degree before 30 October 2017.

Selection Procedure

All candidates for this programme will be selected through a Design Aptitude Test (DAT) to be conducted at DAIICT. Candidates who qualify the DAT will be called for an interview soon after. The final selection will be based on the combined scores attained in the DAT, Statement of purpose(SOP) and the interview and the SOP. The DAT will constitute 50% , SOP 20% and the interview 30% of the overall marks assigned to the admission test. However, candidates with a valid CEED score can also apply. It may be noted that only the candidates who have qualified Part A, and have obtained a minimum of 25 marks in Part B, will be directly called for the interview. Also note that all candidates should submit a detailed Statement of Purpose along with their applications.

Statement of Purpose

All candidates will have to submit their Statements of Purpose online, along with their applications. Applications without an SOP will not be considered.   Candidates will have to relate the curricular content of the  MDes (CD) programme to their own interests and aptitudes and explain how they can learn and contribute to the programme in their own way.

Design Aptitude Test

The Design Aptitude Tests consists of 2 parts, each bearing 25 marks each.
Part 1: This test will evaluate the candidate’s drawing skills and imaginative visualisation. The candidate will be given an object for visually representing the object for imaginative application. Here the candidate’s drawing skills including human form drawing in proportion will form the criteria. The candidate’s imaginative ability for finding different uses of a given object and ability to create a story with communication value using the given object as a ‘character’ in the story will also be tested. The language skills and storytelling ability will form the criteria.

Part 2- Will evaluate the candidate’s recognition and understanding of a range of  design idioms, visual/performative art forms and practices from  various social and cultural contexts.
